The Student Survey

College of Management - Nelson Hall

The most powerful force on the college campus today is the student body.  Individually they do wonderful things. Together, they do amazing things.  That interaction with students is what drew me to higher education.  It’s hard to explain to my friends who are still in the corporate world, but there’s just something about the passion and concern these kids have for each other, their university and the world around them.

Not long after I started work here at NC State (41 days on campus, don’t ya know) I was approached by a group of students from the College of Management. They were taking a marketing class and wanted to do a research project on the NC State brand.  We talked and the group agreed to do a couple of focus groups and a survey around the university’s television commercials. I’m not going to spoil it here with the results of their focus group sessions, but do want you to take a look at the survey.

No, I’m not looking for suggestions on how to change it, this is their project.  Just want you to be aware of what’s going on.  The survey questions also get you thinking about the work we’ve all been doing.  Is it good, bad, mediocre.  Is it memorable or not so much.  It’s all valuable information.

So as we prepare for the holiday this week I for one and giving thanks for the students here at NC State.  They are an amazing group who will make a difference in the world.  I know they’ve already made a difference in my life.

Check out the survey below.  Click on the green box and it suddenly gets big. Even I could read it.

I’m looking forward to seeing the results of the survey and the focus groups — especially since the tv ads were supposedly intended for the younger crowd. We’ve not done a very good job in the past of involving students in the university’s communications efforts. This is an untapped resource that I hope the State COMM can take full advantage of in future efforts.

I totally agree and we’ve got more than 30,000 here to work with!

Btw, what application did you use for the survey? I was just reading about how the university of nebraska uses online surveys to improve online course offerings. They use Zoomerang.
